The Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics is large, dynamic and a leading research centre in mathematical sciences in the country. We play a central role in the Faculty of Science and offer a broad range of courses in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, including courses for other faculties. The Department has over thirty faculty members, ten administrative staff members and more than 50 postgraduate students.

Applications are sought for a permanent post at the level of Full Professor. The successful candidate will be expected to take up the position as Head of Department for an initial term of five years, with the possibility for extension following standard UCT procedures for such extensions.

The department is seeking a dynamic academic leader who is internationally recognized for the quality of his/her research in some field of Mathematics or Applied Mathematics. Candidates must be in possession of a PhD in the Mathematical Sciences and are expected to have an excellent track record of research, teaching and postgraduate supervision. Demonstrable managerial skills are expected.

The successful applicant is expected to take up the leadership of the department within the first 3 to 6 months of appointment and to oversee its administration in close cooperation with the Departmental Manager. The candidate is also expected to maintain a research programme and to contribute to postgraduate supervision and to teach courses in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics (with a reduced teaching load during the term of headship).

The annual remuneration package, including benefits, at Professorial level is ZAR 837 169, plus an additional Head of Department allowance.
