Finance Assistant - BBC Media Action in Dar es Salaam


Job Title: Finance Assistant, Tanzania

Location: Tanzania

Reports to: Finance Officer

Contract duration: 12 months (with possible extension)

Salary: Highly competitive within Tanzanian NGO market rates

Job purpose

To support the finance function of BBC Media Action in Tanzania.

BBC Media Action in Tanzania is seeking a Finance Assistant. The postholder will be an accountant with at least two years’ experience and registered as a member of NBAA. S/he will support the finance function of BBC Media Action in Tanzania including maintaining suppliers' accounts, processing suppliers' invoices, processing payment vouchers, issuing checks for all accounts due, maintaining finance filing system and managing petty cash.

Context

BBC Media Action uses media and communications to reduce poverty and promote human rights in developing countries. To achieve this, Media Action partners with civil society, local media and governments to:

• Produce creative programmes in multi-media formats, based on robust research, which inform and engage audiences around key development issues.

• Strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure.

BBC Media Action delivers a portfolio of media projects in Tanzania. It seeks to expand this portfolio of work, but also ensure that existing projects are delivered to time, to budget and to the highest standards, and in accordance with BBC editorial values as well as Media Action methodologies.

Main Duties

Assist with monitoring the financial system in order to ensure that BBC Media Action finances are maintained in an accurate and timely manner

Maintain supplier accounts

Process supplier invoices

Process payments vouchers

Issue cheques for all accounts due

Assist with the annual audit

Assist with the maintenance of the finance filing system

Assist with month end as well as year end returns

Tracking all the funds request submitted to Finance ensuring that they are timely processed

Deal with cash management such as managing petty cash

Knowledge, skills and experience

Holder of first degree in Accountancy or equivalent – with original copies of qualification documents

At least two years professional working experience at the level of Finance Assistant or above within a recognised NGO or INGO

Experience of working with and reporting to international donors

Good interpersonal skills to establish effective working relationships with financial and non-financial staff within BBC Media Action.

Able to communicate effectively at all levels within the organization.

Excellent IT skills with experience of operating computer-based financial management systems.

An eye for detail and a concern for accuracy.
