The Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences at the University of Cape Town is seeking to appoint a full-time Laboratory Technologist on a three-year contract to perform routine drug susceptibility testing and target identification assays in a specialized biological safety level III (BSLIII) laboratory as part of a larger tuberculosis (TB) drug discovery consortium involving the Molecular Mycobacteriology Research Unit (MMRU) and the H3-D Drug Discovery and Development Centre.
Requirements:
• An appropriate tertiary qualification
• Experience in Microbiology
• Demonstrated organizational and data management skills
The following would be advantageous:
• A Master’s degree
• Experience in the handling and manipulation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis under Biological Safety Level III conditions
Responsibilities will include:
• Routine assessments of compound efficacy against M. tuberculosis laboratory and clinical strains
• Maintaining accurate records and communication of screening results
• Performing routine tasks associated with target identification
Owing to the nature of the work, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a pre-employment medical.
The annual cost of employment, including benefits, is between R255 044 and R300 021.
