Job Title: Assistant Technical Officer

We invite applications for this position, for appointment as soon as possible.
The successful candidate will assist in the preparation, organization and monitoring of 1st year Chemistry laboratory practicals, as well as the smooth and safe running of these. He/she will also be responsible for the maintenance of technical equipment in the undergraduate teaching laboratories and will be involved in other portfolios and administrative duties.
Requirements include:
• A National Senior Certificate or equivalent
• A minimum of 2 years experience working in a Chemistry laboratory
• Experience in making up chemical solutions
• Computer skills, including MS Word and MS Excel
The following would be advantageous:
• Degree or Diploma in Chemistry
• Qualification or experience in electronics, mechanical work or glassblowing
• A sound knowledge of Health & Safety practices
• Excellent organisational and management skills
• Experience in maintaining an inventory of chemicals and laboratory supplies
Responsibilities include:
• Preparing chemical solutions for use in practical sessions
• Maintaining inventories and stock control of equipment, chemicals and consumables for the 1st year laboratories
• Preparing laboratories and dispensaries prior to each practical session
• Supervision of laboratory staff
• Technical and administrative duties
The annual remuneration package, including benefits for 2013 is between R187 412 and R220 493.
