Dean - University of Cape Town in Cape Town

Job Title: Dean

Center for Higher Education Development

UCT seeks a candidate for the position of Dean of the Centre for Higher Education Development (CHED) for appointment as soon as possible. The appointment is normally for five years, subject to renewal for a further term.
CHED currently comprises the following units: the Academic Development Programme (including the Alternative Admissions Research Project), the Careers Service, the Centre for Educational Technology, the Centre for Open Learning, and the Higher & Adult Education Studies Development Unit. The Centre’s brief is to focus across faculty boundaries, providing specialist educational expertise and functions to assist faculties to meet UCT’s educational and strategic goals. The Dean will lead strategic interventions to facilitate equity of access and to enhance the quality of teaching and learning within UCT. CHED’s work therefore relates primarily to the formal educational processes of the university, and involves close co-operation and partnerships with the faculties and the university’s Institutional Planning Department. The Dean will report to the Deputy Vice Chancellor: Teaching and Learning.
UCT seeks a Dean with an appropriate scholarly record and the necessary experience and ability to lead and manage CHED. This is a challenging opportunity to provide vision and academic leadership to a large and complex Centre that has acquired national and in some cases international visibility in relation to several of its areas of expertise. The Dean will be expected to lead transformation within CHED by implementing measures to improve, inter alia, the representivity of staff.
As part of the senior management group of the University, he/she will contribute to the strategic and operational leadership of the University as a whole.
The Dean will also participate in educational debates both nationally and internationally.
The remuneration package is competitive and includes sabbatical and discounted fee benefits.
