Protection Options for Women (POW) is a product development partnership (PDP) between PATH and the Shanghai Dahua Medical Apparatus Company (“Dahua”), the manufacturer of the Woman’s Condom. POW will promote sexual and reproductive health, including HIV prevention, by expanding access to the Woman’s Condom. Activities include developing the market in China and South Africa, including achieving international regulatory clearance, building evidence of effectiveness, and creating and sustaining advocacy initiatives to raise awareness of and demand for the Woman’s Condom. POW is employing a total market approach, combining the skills and capacities of the public and private sectors, social marketing groups, and nongovernmental organizations to promote, distribute, and program the Woman’s Condom to increase levels of use among target groups.

The Commercialization Officer will be responsible for creating innovative market test strategies, developing new opportunities for market introduction, and managing relationships with POW partners in South Africa. The Commercialization Officer will be based in the PATH South Africa office and would work remotely as part of the POW team based in Seattle. Duties and responsibilities include:

Generate the necessary evidence for inclusion of female condoms into the private and public sector including:
Develop an overall plan for how to introduce the Woman’s Condom in South Africa that fits with existing funding requirements.
Manage the design and implementation of various market test strategies currently underway in South Africa.
Generate new opportunities for market testing of the Woman’s Condom.
Contribute to the collection, analysis and dissemination of data generated from the market test strategies.
Assist in-country private sector partners in creating a distribution and marketing strategy for the Woman’s Condom, including identifying target market segments, selecting appropriate distribution channels, determining a pricing strategy, and creating a brand, packaging and promotional materials.
Build and maintain relationships with key public sector stakeholders at the country-level to advance inclusion of the Woman’s Condom in public sector programs (family planning and HIV prevention).
Work with the POW team members to identify lessons learned from the market strategy testing that can be generalized for scale-up of the Woman’s Condom.
Contribute to other related initiatives being undertaken by the PATH South Africa office.
Contribute to developing funding proposals.

Required Skills

Required Experience

MBA or business degree, plus three to five years of experience in business development and technology assessment / commercialization / introduction and / or product management. Experience working in South Africa. Understanding of contraceptive and HIV prevention methods preferred.
